Supplication when closing the eyes of the deceased

Umm Salama رضي الله عنها said: "The Messenger of Allah ﷺ came in to Abu Salama when his eyes were fixed. He closed them and said: ‹When the soul is taken, the sight follows it›. Some of his relatives began to wail, and the Prophet ﷺ said: ‹Do not call down upon yourselves anything but good, for the angels say ‹Ameen› to whatever you say›. Then he said:"

"O Allah, forgive Abu Salama, raise his rank among the rightly-guided, and be a successor for his family after him. Forgive us and him, O Lord of the worlds. Make his grave spacious for him, and fill it with light."

The name "Abu Salama" should be replaced with the name of the person being prayed for. "Be a successor" means: replace him with Your own care for those he has left behind.

[Muslim 2130]
