Supplications for the deceased at the funeral prayer

The formulas below are given in the masculine form (pronoun -hu). When praying for a woman, replace every -hu with -ha: e.g. *Allahumma-ghfir la-ha wa-rham-ha, wa ‘afi-ha, wa-‘fu ‘an-ha…*

"O Allah, forgive him, have mercy on him, spare him, and pardon him. Honor his reception, make his entry spacious, wash him with water, snow, and hail, and cleanse him of his sins as a white garment is cleansed of filth. Give him a home better than his home, a family better than his family, a spouse better than his spouse. Admit him to Paradise, and protect him from the torment of the grave and the torment of the Fire."

"Spare him" — from the trials, torments, and darkness of the grave. "Pardon him" — for shortcomings in religious obligations. "Wash him with water, snow, and hail" — a metaphor for full cleansing from every sin and failing.

[Muslim 2232]
