I have turned my face, as a hanif, to Him who created the heavens and the earth; I am not of the polytheists. Truly my prayer, my rites, my life, and my death are for Allah, Lord of the worlds, who has no partner. This I have been commanded, and I am of those who submit. O Allah, You are the King; there is no god but You. You are my Lord and I am Your servant. I have wronged myself and acknowledged my sin, so forgive me all my sins — truly none forgives sins but You. Guide me to the best of character, for none guides to it but You; turn me away from evil character, for none can turn it away from me but You. Here I am, at Your service, in Your pleasure. All good is in Your hands, and evil is not [a means of nearness] to You. I exist by You and return to You. Blessed and exalted are You. I ask Your forgiveness and turn to You in repentance. You are the Truth: Your promise is truth, Your word is truth, the meeting with You is truth, Paradise is truth, the Fire is truth, the prophets are truth, Muhammad is truth, and the Hour is truth. O Allah, to You I have submitted, in You I have placed my trust, in You I believe, to You I turn, by You I argue, and to You I appeal for judgment. So forgive me my past and future sins, what I did in secret and what I did openly. You are the One who brings forward and the One who puts back; there is no god but You. Supplication at the start of the prayer

Between the adhan and the iqamah it is recommended to supplicate for oneself, for the supplication made at that time is not rejected [Abu Dawud 521; Irwa' al-Ghalil 1/262].

The formulas below — du‘a al-istiftah — are recited immediately after the takbirat al-ihram (saying "Allahu akbar" at the start of prayer while raising the hands to the shoulders or earlobes).

"O Allah, distance me from my sins as You have distanced the east from the west. O Allah, cleanse me of my sins as a white garment is cleansed of filth. O Allah, wash me of my sins with snow, water, and hail."
