Virtues of Remembering Allah

Allah the Exalted said: "So remember Me; I will remember you.¹ And be grateful to Me and do not deny Me." (2:152).

Allah the Exalted also said: "O you who have believed, remember Allah with much remembrance." (33:41).

This means: remember Allah with your tongue in every circumstance, for a person is always either obedient or disobedient, and always either in prosperity or in hardship. If one is obedient, he should sincerely remember Allah and ask Him for assistance and for the acceptance of his good deeds. Otherwise, he should beseech Allah to accept his repentance and forgive him. If one lives in prosperity, he should remember Allah with gratitude; and if he falls into hardship, he should remember Allah with patience.

It is also said that this means: glorify Allah as much and as fittingly as you can. Moreover, frequent remembrance of Allah may imply being occupied with acts of worship, since every form of worship is directly connected to remembrance.

Allah the Exalted also said: "Indeed, the Muslim men and Muslim women… and the men who remember Allah often and the women who do so — for them Allah has prepared forgiveness and a great reward." (33:35).

This verse praises men and women who remember Allah with their tongues. One who remembers Allah much is one who almost constantly remembers Him with his heart, or his tongue, or with both heart and tongue. The recitation of the Qur'an, like the pursuit of knowledge, is also remembrance.

It is reported that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: "If [a man] awakens [at night] and wakes his wife, and they then pray two rak'ahs together, they will be counted among those who remember Allah [much]." [Abu Dawud 1309]. One who remembers Allah often is one who continually remembers Him in the morning and the evening, and at various times of the day and night, uttering the words that are known from the Sunnah to have been said by the Prophet ﷺ.

Allah the Exalted also said: "And remember your Lord within yourself in humility and in fear, without being apparent in speech — in the mornings and the evenings. And do not be among the heedless." (7:205).

Here "before sunset" refers to the interval between the 'Asr (afternoon) and Maghrib (sunset) prayers.

It is reported that the Prophet ﷺ said: "The one who remembers his Lord and the one who does not remember Him are like the living and the dead." [Bukhari 6407]².

Here the one who neglects remembrance is compared to the dead, because he cannot bring any benefit either to himself or to others.

It is reported that [one day] the Prophet ﷺ asked [the people]: "Shall I not tell you about the best of your deeds, the purest of them before your Master³, the most exalted in rank, better for you than spending gold and silver, and better than meeting your enemies so that you strike their necks and they strike yours?" They said, "Yes, of course!" He said: "It is the remembrance of Allah the Exalted." [Tirmidhi 3377].

It is reported that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: "Allah, the Mighty and Majestic, says: 'I am as My servant thinks of Me, and I am with him when he remembers Me.⁴ If he remembers Me within himself, I remember him within Myself; and if he remembers Me in a gathering [of people], I remember him in a better gathering.⁵ If he draws near to Me by a hand's span, I draw near to him by a cubit; if he draws near to Me by a cubit, I draw near to him by a fathom; and if he comes to Me walking, I come to him running.'" [Muslim 6805].

"I am as My servant thinks of Me" — this refers to cases when a person believes he will receive an answer to his supplication, or believes his repentance will be accepted, or believes he will be forgiven when he asks for forgiveness, or believes he will be rewarded for his acts of worship when he performs them with all their due conditions. The basis for this is the promises of Allah and of His Messenger ﷺ, who said: "Call upon Allah while being certain of being answered." [Tirmidhi 3479].

"…and I am with him when he remembers Me" — the Qur'an speaks of this as well: "Indeed, Allah is with those who fear Him and those who are doers of good." (16:128). However, this concerns only the believers, to whom Allah grants aid, care, and protection. As for Allah's being with all of His creation, which is by virtue of His knowledge of their deeds, the Qur'an says: "There is no private conversation of three but that He is the fourth of them, nor of five but that He is the sixth of them — and no less than that and no more except that He is with them, wherever they may be." (58:7).

"If he remembers Me within himself, I remember him within Myself" — the meaning is: if he remembers Me secretly, bearing witness that I have no defect and feeling awe of Me, I too remember him within Myself — that is, I shall surely grant him reward, bestow My favors upon him, and protect him.

It is reported from ‘Abdullah ibn Busr (may Allah be pleased with him) that a man said: "O Messenger of Allah, the laws of Islam are [too] many for me⁶, so tell me of something to which I can hold fast." [The Prophet ﷺ] replied: "Let your tongue remain always moist with the remembrance of Allah." [Tirmidhi 3375].

It is reported that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: "Whoever recites [even one] letter from the Qur'an shall have [one] good deed recorded for him, and each good deed is [rewarded] tenfold. I do not say that 'Alif Lam Mim'⁷ is one letter — rather 'Alif' is a letter, 'Lam' is a letter, and 'Mim' is a letter.⁸" [Tirmidhi 2910].

It is reported that ‘Uqba ibn ‘Amir (may Allah be pleased with him) said: "[One day] while we were under the shade [of the mosque], the Messenger of Allah ﷺ came out [of his house] and asked: 'Which of you would like to go out each morning to [the wadi⁹ of] Buthan or [the wadi of] ‘Aqiq and bring back two large-humped she-camels, without committing any sin or severing ties of kinship?' We said: 'O Messenger of Allah ﷺ, we all would like that.' [Then the Prophet ﷺ] said: 'Then why does not each of you go to the mosque in the morning and learn (or: recite) two verses from the Book of Allah? That is better for him than two she-camels; three are better than three; four are better than four; and any number of them is better than the same number of camels.'" [Muslim 1873].

It is reported that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: "Whoever sits in a gathering without remembering Allah, and whoever lies down in a place without remembering Allah, shall suffer loss by [the decree of] Allah." [Abu Dawud 4856].

It is reported that the Prophet ﷺ said: "A people who sit in a gathering in which they do not remember Allah the Exalted and do not invoke blessings upon their Prophet shall inevitably meet with grief, and Allah will punish them if He wills, or forgive them if He wills." [Tirmidhi 3380].

It is reported that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: "People who leave a gathering in which they did not remember Allah always leave behind something like the carcass of a dead donkey, and loss will befall them." [Abu Dawud 4855].

¹Ibn ‘Abbas and Ibn Jubayr said: "[This means]: remember Me by obeying Me, and I will remember you [by granting you] My forgiveness." [Ibn al-Jawzi, Zad al-Masir].

²Another hadith reports that the Prophet ﷺ said: "A house in which Allah is remembered and a house in which Allah is not remembered are like the living and the dead." [Muslim 1823].

³In other words, a deed for which Allah grants you the greatest reward.

These words indicate that at such moments Allah aids the person, guides him to the right path, and cares for him — a manifestation of mercy. [al-Nawawi, al-Minhaj].

That is, the angels.

The man meant not the obligatory acts of worship but the voluntary ones. [al-Mubarakpuri, Tuhfat].

The 2nd, 3rd, 29th, 30th, 31st, and 32nd suras of the Qur'an begin with these letters.

Meaning that reciting each of these letters is recorded as ten good deeds.
