Duas for illness, for the sick, and for healing
Duas for illness and healing: words for the sick when visiting them, the supplication for pain, and the dua of one who has lost hope of recovery — with Arabic text, translation, and source.
Illness in the Sunnah is not a punishment but a purification. The Prophet ﷺ visited the sick, said particular words over them, and taught the sick person himself what to say when the pain is hard to bear.
Gathered here: the words of supplication for a sick person when visiting him, the excellence of the visit itself, the dua of a sick person who has lost hope of living, and what is said in pain.
Each supplication comes with the Arabic text, a word-by-word translation, and a reference to its source — al-Bukhari, Muslim, an-Nasa'i.
One supplication on this theme is set down in the Quran: Ayyub (peace be upon him) in his illness only describes his condition without asking outright for relief (21:83). This is the text of the Book, not a report transmitted through hadith.
